Pauline Vano Obituary

PAULINE J. VANO Pauline Vano was born on a small farm in the hills 5 miles north of Boyceville, Wisconsin. She was born on January 24, 1913 to Andrew and Johanna Vano. Pauline Johanna Vano was baptized at Holy Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church on March 26, 1913. As a young lady she was blessed with physical beauty and could have been a beauty contestant; however, modesty prevailed. During the 1930's, she and her sister Ann moved to Chicago, IL., and lived near the Lincoln Park Zoo. During WW II she worked to help the war effort. She continued city work into the 1970's. One employer was Suncraft Manufacturing Company. Her jobs required excellent vision. Pauline was an avid baseball fan. Her team was the Chicago Cubs. Her sports hero was Andy Pafko, a hometown boy from Boyceville. When she retired from the big city life, she came back to Boyceville, helped build a home in 1981, and lived with sister Millie. Their next door neighbors were sister Ann with husband Paul Diko. Autumn found Pauline and Millie picking mushrooms from the countryside. After drying, the mushrooms were distributed to stores and restaurants in Chicagoland. Pauline and Millie enjoyed driving to various towns and cities. They especially frequented bargain stores. As health failed, Pauline and Millie moved into Autumn Village, Lutheran Home, Menomonie, WI. While there, they especially enjoyed playing Bingo. Pauline continued her lifelong love of crossword puzzles. Her illness culminated quickly in the last two months of her life. She died at 9 a.m. on October 10, 2002. Her age was 89 years, 8 months and 16 days. The only survivor in her immediate family is her sister Millie. Other relatives are nephews, Milan and (Gloria) Vano of Long Prairie, MN; Andrew and (Sally) Vano of Carlos, MN; Joseph and (Shirley) Vano of Rapid City, SD; Larry and (Jacqueline) Vano of Chicago, IL; Michael and (Deb) Diko of Minneapolis, MN; and neice Paula and (David) Streitelmeier of Valparaiso, IN. On a short street in Boyceville there is a street sign. It says "Vano Street". Funeral services 3 PM Monday, October 14 at Olson Funeral Home in Menomonie with the Rev. Paul Pillman officiating. Burial in Tiffany Cemetery in Boyceville. Visitation Monday from 1:30 until time of the service at the funeral home.
