January 7, 1935 - October 23, 2015
Janice Ardell Schroeder, 80, of Menomonie, Wisconsin, passed away on October 23, 2015. Janice was born on January 7, 1935, in Menomonie, to Earl and Dorthea Sorenson. She grew up in Menomonie, attended Menomonie High School and married her sweetheart, Charles J. Schroeder on September 26, 1953, at Peace Lutheran Church. They started their married life on the family Schroeder farm and in 1956 they embarked on an adventurous move to Eagle River, Alaska, where they homesteaded, built a log home on a beautiful mountain valley and learned to dine on wild game, king crab, and salmon. Janice stayed at home to raise their two daughters, Sandy and Debbie, and Charles worked at the Elmendorf Airforce base in Mountain View. In 1961, their son Rob was born, a true Alaskan sourdough. While in Alaska, Janice enjoyed gardening, fishing, learning how to prepare all the wild game including moose, bear, and the caribou her husband brought home from his many hunting trips, visiting with neighbors, supporting the Brownie troop activities, and taking special care of her family. She believed strongly in education and taught her daughters how to read, write, and do basic math before they entered first grade because kindergarten wasn’t offered in Eagle River. Janice was also a participating member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Chugach, a church they help build. After 10 years, Janice and her family returned to Menomonie and the family farm in 1966 where they raised beef cows, had large gardens, and purchased horses for the three children. While her husband recouped from a major back operation, Janice joined the workforce after receiving her nurse’s aide training. She started employment at the old Memorial Hospital and then transferred to the Dunn County Health Care Center until her retirement in 1994. While at home and throughout her career, Janice believed strongly in the family sharing the dinner meal together at 5:30 pm and the highlights of their day. She took pride in always preparing well-balanced meals that incorporated much of her own canned and fresh garden items as well as the meat raised on the farm. She enjoyed being a caregiver and always gave time to her family and others with a smile and gracious heart. In early retirement, Janice spent some warm winters in Lake Wales, Florida and Lake Havesu, Arizona. She enjoyed activities such taking long drives to see the scenic countryside, playing cards and board games, listening to music, shopping for the grandchildren, and watching Molly B’s Polka shows. Janice was a generous and extremely kind person who enjoyed the outdoors. But most of all, Janice cherished spending quality time with family and friends. For the final twelve years of her life, Janice struggled with transverse myelitis and several years with Alzheimer’s disease, but through it all she was blessed with an extremely supportive husband. Janice and Chuck, as she called him, shared a life filled with love and they modeled an inspirational marriage of commitment and great devotion to each other. She spent the last 18 months of her life at Our House in assisted living and continued to demonstrate her gracious spirit to the residents. Her husband never missed an opportunity to see her every day. Janice and her laughter will be missed by all. Survivors include her husband of 62 years and her daughters Sandy White of Menomonie and Debbie (Bill) Harmon of Menomonie; daughter-in-law, Bridget (Greg) Schroeder-Marshall of Menomonie; four granddaughters, Kelly (Scott) Goforth of Chicago, Kari (Ryan) Larson of San Diego, Morgan Schroeder of Eau Claire, and Lexi Schroeder of Menomonie. She is survived by two great-granddaughters, Teagan and Tayt Goforth of Chicago and two great-grandsons, Tanner Schroeder-Wolosek of Eau Claire and Ben Larson of San Diego. She is also survived by her sister, Ann (Ed) Korbel of Byron, MN and sister-in-law Shirley Sorenson, Lake Wales, FL as well as many nieces and nephews. Janice was preceded in death by her parents, infant daughter, Peggy Jean Schroeder, son, Charles Robin (Rob) Schroeder, and her brothers, Raymond Sorenson and Albert Sorenson. The viewing will be held at Olson funeral home on Monday, October 26, 4 -7 pm and one hour prior to the funeral service at the church on Tuesday. The celebration of Janice’s life is scheduled for 11 am on Tuesday, October 27, at Peace Lutheran Church with Pastor Kristine Stedje officiating. Lunch will be served afterwards with interment in Peace Lutheran Cemetery at a later date. The family would also like to express their deep appreciation to the nurses and staff at both Interim Hospice and Our House Assisted Living, who brought great comfort in an unimaginably difficult time. A very special thanks must also be extended to her niece, Gail Dunahee, who provided emotional support to her cousins and uncle.
