Herb Schutz Obituary (1916 - 2013) - Menomonie, Wisconsin

Herb Schutz, age 97, of Menomonie, died Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at the American Lutheran Home in Menomonie. Herbert David Schutz was born on February 4, 1916 to Alfred and Bess (Taylor) Schutz in Boyceville, WI. He graduated from Boyceville High School in 1934. Herb attended Stout Institute for two years and was a member of the Stout football team. On August 26, 1941 he married Dorothy Husby and on October 26, 1942 he was inducted into the U.S. Army. During his colorful life, Herb was a hobo, wrangler, truck driver, school bus owner/operator, life insurance agent, bill collector, City of Menomonie motorcycle policeman, Dunn County Deputy Sheriff, dairy farmer, abstractor and politician. He was the Register of Deeds for Dunn County from 1949 to 1987. More importantly, Herb was a tireless worker and volunteer for the Menomonie Lions Club (charter member, president, district governor and Melvin Jones Fellow), Our Savior's Lutheran Church (council member, congregational president), Myrtle Werth Medical Center (board member), Chippewa Valley Technical College (board member), First Bank and Trust (board member), Dunn County United Way (charter member, campaign chairperson), Dunn County Chapter of the American Red Cross (chairman), National Foundation for the March of Dimes (officer), Dunn County Historical Society (lifetime member), Menomonie Area Chamber of Commerce, Hosford-Chase Post #32 of the American Legion (commander), Boy Scouts, Loyal Order of the Moose, Dunn County Republican Party and Third Congressional District U.S. Service Academy Selection Commission. In 1994 Herb was honored as the Greater Menomonie Area Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year. In 2005 he was inducted into the Menomonie Bowling Association Hall of Fame. Herb was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and friend. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, hunting, fishing, snow skiing and water skiing. He was an avid Packer and Brewer Fan. But his true dedication was to his partner of 67 years-his wife Dorothy. Together they were a part of the fabric of the Menomonie and Dunn County area. Herb is survived by his daughter, Patricia (Keith) Leiseth of Payson, AZ; son Timothy (Jane) Schutz of Menomonie; four grandchildren; Kjrsten (Joel) Bobb of Wever, IA; Jon (Tessa) Leiseth of Pietermaritzburg, South Africa; Jennifer (Will) Tong of Emeryville, CA; Gretchen (Brandon) Ray of Montesano, WA; eight great grandchildren: Morgan Bobb, Zachary Bobb, Isaac Leiseth, Sophia Leiseth, Colby Tong, Lucas Tong, Zoe Ray,Kian Ray; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dorothy, and brothers Ted, Dan, Willard, Vernon and George. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 6, 2013 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Menomonie with Pastor Heather Wigdahl officiating, followed with Military Honors by the Menomonie Veterans Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 9:00 to 11:00 on Monday at the church prior to the service. Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery in Menomonie at a later date. The family suggests memorials to the American Red Cross.
