ARLENE H. WATLAND Arlene H. Watland, age 81, of rural Menomonie, died Tuesday, April 19, 2005 at home with hospice. Arlene was born on March 8, 1924 in Detroit, Michigan to Helen Fetherspil. In her early life, she was raised in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. At the age of six, she moved to Downsville where her stepfather, Jake Fritz, adopted her. Arlene went to grade school in Downsville and graduated from Menomonie Central High School in 1941. During WWII, she worked in Milwaukee as a bookkeeper at a defense plant. Arlene married Elmer Watland on March 1, 1945 in Baldwin, WI. Together they farmed and raised four children in rural Menomonie. She also was a bookkeeper for their general contracting business. Arlene was a very active member of New Hope Lutheran Church in Downsville especially in the Dorcas Circle and Women of the ELCA. She was a great woman of faith that was evident in her love for her family and friends. Arlene enjoyed helping people, reading, tending her flowers, watching and feeding her birds. Arlene is survived by: 2 sons and 1 daughter Gary Watland (fianc�, Beth) of Owatonna, MN Gloria (Glen) Miller of Menomonie Ted Watland of Menomonie 6 grandchildren 4 great-grandchildren 5 sisters-in-law and 3 brothers-in-law Alice Watland of Superior Sofia Selchert of Castlewood, SD Dorothy Wiedman of LaCrosse Lloyd (Florence) Johnson of Eau Claire Marion (Jeanne) Johnson of Menomonie Clarence Johnson of Tennessee A special cousin, Bernice Anderson of Marquette, MI A special friend, Mary Lou Whinnery of Menomonie Numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends And her faithful dog, Tina She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a son, William. Funeral services 11:00 AM Friday, April 22, 2005 at New Hope Lutheran Church in Downsville with the Rev. Steven Carlson officiating. Burial in Riverview Cemetery, Twp. Dunn, Dunn Co. Family and friends are welcome from 4:00 until 7:00 PM on Thursday at Olson Funeral Home in Menomonie and from 10:00 AM until time of service Friday at the church.
