Stanley R. Garnsworthy Obituary (1952 - 2017)

Stanley Garnsworthy passed away July 20th at home with his family after a 15 month courageous battle with cancer. During those months, he always had a positive attitude, believing that he would be able to overcome it. Unfortunately, this time cancer won. Stan was born December 28, 1952 in Prairie du Chien, WI to Stanley and Mary Lou Garnsworthy. Stan spent much of his youth fishing, hunting and trapping on the Mississippi River. His early experiences fostered a lifelong love of nature, wildlife and outdoor sports. He would rather be outdoors experiencing the woods coming to life in the spring, the leaves changing colors in fall, or the crispness of winter on his cheeks than anywhere else. While he was doing this he always had one of his dogs by his side, following wherever he went. Stan believed in always following through on what you said you were going to do. He always tried to treat people fairly and expect nothing from them he wasn’t willing to do. He was an extremely hard worker who always had one or two projects he was working on. He tried to always be a positive influence on anyone he met and had a very positive, upbeat attitude and a strong sense of his faith even during his hardest struggles. Stan met his wife Sue, in college at Stevens Point, WI. They were married January 8, 1977 and enjoyed 40 years together. They were blessed with a son, Christopher and a daughter, Jennifer. They were the pride of his life and he always tried to encourage in them the love of nature he had. He enjoyed attending all of their activities and went on many Boy Scout camping trips throughout Chris’ time in the Scouts. His new pride and enjoyment came spending time with his grandchildren and watching their curiosity grow in the world around them. One of his greatest regrets is not being able to spend more time with them. Stan and Sue enjoyed spending time together fishing and at their cabin. They also enjoyed traveling, visiting Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, Iceland, Germany, Ireland, France, Mexico, Hawaii and Alaska. Recently Stan had reconnected with high school friends who took fishing trips together and along with their wives vacationed in Mexico. Stan worked 36 years for 3M retiring in 2014. During those years he made many wonderful friendships and gained the respect of coworkers. He was also involved in community organizations and was an active member of his church. He helped get the local chapter of The National Wildlife Turkey Federation started and served as president for many years. Stan is survived by his wife Sue, son Christopher (Jennifer) Garnsworthy, daughter Jennifer (Stephon) Flynn and grandchildren Nicholas and Madelyn Garnsworthy. He is also survived by his mother Mary Lou, sisters June Hoeger, Jean (Ralph) Patterson, and Jane (Keith) Butler, many nieces, a nephew, many friends and his newest chocolate lab Logan. Visitation to honor Stan will be Friday, July 28th from 4-7 at the Olson Funeral Home in Menomonie and at the church an hour before the service on Saturday. A celebration of his life will be Saturday, July 29th at 11:00 at the United Methodist Church in Menomonie with Pastor Wendy Slaback officiating. He will be greatly missed and leave a huge hole in our lives and hearts. We hope the fishing and hunting are great Stan!!
